structure
STRUCTURE

Structure began with my observation of a Brutalist concrete staircase. I became less interested in the staircase as an object and more interested in the visual system underneath it: geometry, mass, repetition, negative space, balance, and material severity.

The architectural reference is therefore not reproduced literally. Instead, it is dismantled and reconstructed as abstraction.

The composition is built from three principal colors—white, black, and charred brown. Scraped and distressed brown surfaces create a raw, concrete-like texture, while the cleaner black-and-white geometry introduces precision and structure.

The contrast between those surfaces is important. One feels controlled and designed; the other feels weathered, physical, and imperfect.

Like much of my work, Structure sits at the intersection of art, architecture, and design. A utilitarian architectural element becomes a study of proportion, material, texture, and negative space—removing function while retaining the visual power of the original structure.
